Guest Blogger: Cleo
May 4th, 2010 by Marilyn
Five year old Cleo is our first quadruped guest blogger.
Skills: Sleeping, slobbering, ear-scratching. Being soft.
Likes: Josie, tennis balls, pumpkin biscuits, eating grass, pizza crust, chewing fur off behind, butter within reach.
Dislikes: Josie going to school, lack of pizza crust, humans talking too much, unfriendly cats, butter out of reach.
Loves: Josie
She doesn’t type, read, cook, bake or pay attention longer than five seconds, but Cleo has something to tell you:
Any idea what it is?

Yup, it’s clear as day. She is saying she wants me to come visit.
uh oh! Cleo’s siren song?
Give that pup some butter, STAT! so cute.
I played it for Dotsie and Bean to decipher and they decided that she wants to come to California to chase rabbits in the canyon. With her Mamma of course.
x
I think she’s thinking
“Squirrel!”
Doesn’t Cleo howl when she hears an emergency vehicle? I knew a dog that would howl like that when the phone rang. Maybe Cleo is sad because Josie left for school.
I had a puppy just like Cleo! She needs lots of skritching behind the ears–and more toys.
Ambulance, siren, air raid alarm, thunder, lightening, even when I can’t hear it. These are the noises that set my dogs howling. I love it.
She’s calling me to come scratch her tush…
Yes, I’d definitely say the butter’s out of reach. Poor long-suffering Cleo, who clearly has been denied any good-tasting thing for ever so long. I’m ready to set to howling on her behalf. OwwOOOO!
Clearly she is saying “You scrape the bowl like a housewife.”
The fire siren?
Oh, Cleo! Such a soulful sound. It wouldn’t matter what it meant…if I was in earshot and within arm’s length that song would absolutely require a big long hug and a thorough ear scratching. Maybe with a pizza crust chaser.
Cleo is still howling about KU’s early exit in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
Tonight I went to the Mary Oliver poetry reading at the Lied Center. She read three poems about her dog Percy. I though Cleo might like this poem.
LITTLE DOG’S RHAPSODY IN THE NIGHT
(PERCY THREE)
He puts his cheek against mine
and makes small, expressive sounds.
And when I’m awake, or awake enough
he turns upside down, his four paws
in the air
and his eyes dark and fervent.
Tell me you love me, he says.
Tell me again.
Could there be a sweeter arrangement?
Over and over
he gets to ask it.
I get to tell.
The following is a line from one of the poems Mary Oliver read this evening:
“If God exists he isn’t just butter and good luck.”
I thought Cleo might like it also.
she needs a kiss,marilyn…give her one from me.sweet cleo~
…or maybe Josie just left and took the butter with her! Noooo-woooo-wooo!!
Awww what a lovely guest blogger. It makes me want to get a dog.
she wants you to make me cheese straws…thats what I heard anyway.
This is an excellent idea. I think I should I should recruit Maggie to be a guest blogger so I can actually have a blog again. Clearly she’d do a better job than I’ve been!
She is the cutest thing!
Oh my, what an adorable adorable adorable Cleo! Clearly she picked her people well. I think she is saying – what’s with the camera? I want butter, to be played with, butter, crust, a ball to chew and you to fetch, butter and a nap. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me
)
Pleeeeeease! Pleeease, Pumpking Biscuits! Pleeeeeease, Moooooooooom!
Of course, the exact wording is open to interpretation, but I believe that’s the heart of it. The dialect is rather obscure.
I was once married to a man that sounded like Cleo. From Cleo it’s cute:)
Happy Memorial Day Weekend, Marilyn!!!
you have an adorable dog
OMG, Cleo is the spitting image of Skipper T. Lovebody, a beautiful, dear, sweet labber I had the privilege of living with and loving a long time ago. Thanks for the blast from the past.
oops… just played Cleo’s ballad, and now I have two frantic Westies desperately searching the house for the singer. What a hoot!
omg! cleo is soooooooooooooooo cute!
As the owner of two labs, and having had nothing but labs most of my adult life, i have one thing to say. Man, I love that dog!!!
