What perfect writing! This piece conjured up the same tastes and heart tugging emotions. My dad is not gone, but going, via the long goodbye of Alzheimer's disease. Yes I have demolished almost a loaf of homemade bread and butter while listening to my mom relate some intricately detailed story, usually about nothing, though it allowed her to give voice to her grief and her sense of helplessness in this face of this relentless heartless disease. Yes bread, butter and potatoes are my very good friends to whom I will never forbid a place in my home. Thanks for helping me with my grief too. I think I'll go and make some French Onion Soup

What a lovely, heart-wrenching post. I am sorry for the loss of your dad. Your love for him shines through every paragraph.

Beautiful post. And the soup is so inviting. I lost my dad two years ago in July and it's an empty feeling at times. But the happy things I remember about him come to me all the time. Just a drive in the country, a stop at a Cracker Barrel, a nice fall day with the hint of deer hunting, or while mowing the lawn. Fond memories.

When that initial raw pain leaves us we are left with blessed memories... and sometimes soup. Thinking of you
