Down the Rabbit Hole, Vegas
Feb 6th, 2009 by Marilyn
I am in a city of lights, but it’s the wrong one.

We’re here in Las Vegas for a lawyer-group-meeting thing. It’s my first time here, but oddly, I’m not feeling the tingle of a place I’ve never been. You know how it’s good to step out of the comfort zone now and then? Well my friends, there is stepping out, and there is hurtling into the abyss.
I am risk-averse – and I lost money on my way to breakfast this morning, because slot machines were near the coffee. I like my cities to be humming, worn and walkable; I don’t see any sidewalks, and what’s more, it seems that management has hidden the way out. Vegas, baby! It’s a fascinating first date, but we’re not hitting it off.
Of course, no trip is a total loss. There are smooth white sheets that are curiously fur-free. It’s not 5 degrees, it’s all on the firm, there are buttery croissants and tiny jars of honey…

…and some remarkably fiery Kung Pao. More report to come, but all in all, I’d rather be sipping coffee with friends, walking Cleo in the frozen park, and I’d certainly rather be in Paris. Where would you rather be?

Try Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, and Valley of Fire. Been there more times than I care to share, (multiple trade shows and retail stores)and my favorite spots are away from the city. Red Rock Canyon is not far at all. The first time I ever saw a wild horse was on my way to Mt. Charleston from Vegas.
Sadly, Vegas is not on my list on ten thousand things to do before I die. Everyone raves about it and while they go on and on and on – I flatline.
I’d rather be in Syndey, soaking up the sun and enjoying the sights.
I’d rather be anywhere when D.C. is 20 degrees and windy b/c it makes people so mean. But today I pick Istanbul, with a backpack and a doner.
Do you need to ask? ºOº I’d rather be at The Wilderness Lodge (or Animal Kingdom Lodge) with my refillable mug filled to the brim with diet coke and ice, lounging in a lounge chair in the sun, by the pool, listening to the squealing and laughing children, reading the latest issue of Midwest Living! ºOº
But since I cannot be there, I am thrilled it is Friday, it is 67 degrees and in about two hours, my house will be filled with laughter and never ending stories of the week. You know the stories, who said what in class, who likes who this week, which teachers were gone and which subs were funny. So, I am pretty happy to be right where I am for the weekend. Who knows, maybe we will even have mmmmmmmudslides to celebrate the warm weather!
I did not like Vegas. We too, had to go for work. We were there 4 days and it’s 4 days I will never get back. I can’t think of one thing I liked about it and I was never so happy as to be in the airport flying back to Kansas City.
I hope your day looks up!
I’d rather be in Maine. Pretty much always.
Don’t they have an indoor Paris in Vegas somewhere? An air-conditioned sanitized Vegas? *shudders* I wonder what it’s like….
Just LOVE that amazing first photo! Enjoy the warmth and the honey… how ’bout a pool? Don’t they have a pool? I wish I was sipping hot cocoa by a roaring fire somewhere.
I’d rather be in Tahiti. Snorkeling in the clearest water on earth. Warm, friendly, clean. Eating fruits and vegetables I never knew existed. A once in a lifetime trip. I’d love to be there again.
Behind the buffets and cliches, this town has a lot to offer- especially when it comes to food. Two words Joel Robuchon. Avoid the slot machines and find a quiet bar with a nice bartender and video poker. You can slowly play through $20 while enjoying free drinks. Get a massage in the spa. Head to your room when the trying-to-hard partyers are in full swing and order a hot fudge sundae from room service then get up early and enjoy exploring the hotel/casino in peace. Give Vegas a chance!
Great question! I’m feeling frazzled and hectic. I need to slow time down, and while Lawrence, KS. is a great town to do this, I just can’t seem to manage. Perhaps, Vienna would do the trick. I like the European concept of slowing things down. If that doesn’t do the trick, I’ll take Austin, TX. with its BBQ, Mexican food, and live music.
As I write it’s 50 degrees in Lawrence. If the wind stays away, we’ll have a fine day here.
take care,

I’ve never been to Vegas, and I think I’d feel the same way there as you do. The place I’d rather be is not, I seriously doubt, on anyone else’s destination list: Delavan, Illinois. My great-aunt (who’s 90) is there, along with about a hundred cousins. I’m going through a little bit of a rough patch in my life right now, and when the going gets tough, I wanna get going to Delavan. Fresh-baked cookies and hot coffee around the kitchen table with family, lots of hugs and laughter…it’s restorative.
I take it back. I do remember ONE THING in Vegas that I liked.
If you have a chance, go see the Mac King commedy hour. I think it was at Harrahs. It was fun. And if you don’t like it, they have drinks too……
Paris…that is where I would rather be…sorry, but never Vegas!
Actually, I’ve found some good antique stores there. But you have to go off the strip. Way off.
I would like to be somewhere super warm. Tahiti? That sounds nice…
I’ve never been to Vegas. I would rather be in Paris also, or London.
Without a doubt, Paris! My favorite city on earth!
Why S? – I too, have found some good antique stores there.
