Ten-Word Thursday: Oatmeal
Oct 9th, 2008 by Marilyn
I’m short on blog time this morning, which nicely sets the stage well for a Ten-Word Thursday. In the fast lane today, Oatmeal.
I love oatmeal, especially the steel-cut version, which is supposed to be healthier – and given the price, it better be. Unfortunately, steel-cut oatmeal takes longer than the quickie 2-minute stuff and I rarely make it at home – but I did enjoy some recently at Ingredient, a local restaurant that really did it up right with heavy cream, toasted pecans, brown sugar and bananas. Oatmeal heaven! So good it deserves its own paragraph, but let’s do it in ten words:

Thank you, steel cut oatmeal, for keeping things on track.

I believe that about says it all.
Anyone else have an ode to oatmeal? In ten words, give it your best shot.

I make steel-cut oats in the crockpot overnight. Before bed I put one cup of oats with four cups of liquid (I usually do 3c of water and 1c of soy milk) in the pot. When I wake up, yummy oatmeal. Then each family member gets to “dress” the oats the way they prefer.
I don’t have 10 words but I wanted to let you know that you can make steel-cut oatmeal overnight in your slow-cooker. Ready for breakfast when you are!
Dear steel cut oats, your are a great natural laxative.
I purchase my steel cut oats at a bulk foods store. The fancy’cans’o'oatmeal is a bit expensive, but as a bulk food they aren’t too bad.
Love steel-cut oatmeal. I also get it at the bulk food store, so it’s less expensive. Baked oatmeal is awesome, too.
Love Ingredient – everything I’ve had there is excellent. A welcome addition to trips to Lawrence!
Warm comfort sticks to my ribs full all morning long.
steel cut + cream + brown sugar + dried cherries + walnuts = winter favorite
(plus signs aren’t words are they?)
Steel-cut oats not good in muesli, only made mistake once!
Butter + Milk + Brown Sugar+ Dried Apples, = unhealty but good oatmeal.
oatmeal..where would breakfast be without it? I’m actually thinking of making my baked oatmeal…yum.
You were over by a few thousand words. Your pictures were each worth over a thousand. Good job. I love oatmeal too! Nella
Steel cut oatmeal is okay. Where’s my crumb cake recipe?
The above comment is made in good humor, using ten words. Please don’t read it as obnoxious. Your ode has inspired me to try Trader Joe’s steel cut oats.
Heavy cream, toasted pecans, brown sugar and bananas–oh, my!
(Written while eating Kahlua cake slice big as my head!)
Ha ha. There. Two ten-word tributes to food. I may be going slightly insane…
ban Carol she has Trader Joe’s and we do not. (10 words!)
(applauding)
All good! Extra points to those mentioning laxative effects and brown sugar. Now I think I may be in the market for a slow-cooker. And yes, it would be delightful to have Trader Joe’s in Lawrence.
Just saw your mandelbread post on tastespotting – and it looked so delicious (and was so nostalgic for me) that we featured it on our blog at Penn Appetit. Please take a look here! Great blog all around!
yummy, like cashmere, or a sleeping baby in my arms…
I ADORE oatmeal!
What setting would you use to make oatmeal overnight in the slow cooker? I’m thinking this is a great idea.
