Invitation to Autumn
Aug 28th, 2008 by Marilyn
I don’t wish to be rude or anything, Autumn, but…what’s taking you so long? Did you get delayed in Chicago, ran out of gas, took the scenic route, what? Because I’m about done with humid heat and frizzy hair, Autumn. I’m just done.
Tell you what – I’ll sweeten the deal.

Look! I made hot chocolate. Okay? It’s still 97 blazing, itchy degrees here, but I made hot chocolate. With marshmallows. And cinnamon. And in a show of hope and exceedingly good will, I wore a cozy sweatshirt to bed and put that hot chocolate on my nightstand. Then I pulled up the covers and prayed for leaves.

hint hint
But…nothing. I got overheated and the trees stayed green.
What – do you prefer whipped cream to marshmallows? Because I can make that happen, Autumn. I’ll do anything – just wave your wand and color things up. Extra cookies if you cool things down.
That is my invitation, and I don’t think I’m alone. Anyone else ready for warm pajamas, cold nights and hot chocolate?

Always ready! Of course it doesn’t hurt that I getting married this fall…all the more reason to hurry it along. I made my first hot coco earlier this week with just the same hopes.
Your post put a smile on my face!
I love Autumn too! I must admit, I think it did get stuck here in Chicago! The past couple of weeks have been lovely days in the 70′s, nights in the 50′s. I’m in heaven! Having spent my freshman year at KU, I can feel and sympathize for your hot, humid weather pain!
Noooooooooo. We haven’t had enough summer here. The nights are already cool and my tan is not deep enough. Keep your autumn in the mid-west, don’t let it near the east coast yet
I am with you. Diva even has her fall fashions out hoping fall will show up soon. We are cold weather lovers here and can’t wait to see the heat and humidity go away for a while.
Another scorching day in Kansas! Maybe if we pray for snow, Mother Earth will compromise with us?
I am so ready for Autumn! I opened the door this morning and was knocked over by the humidity…..
I’m ready for chili, soup beans and cornbread, chicken and dumplings. Then, in a couple months, gingerbread.
And, of course, hot chocolate. With BOTH.
(Gingerbread was my dad’s birthday cake most years — his birthday is at the end of November).
Autumn might not come for your hot chocolate, but I will! We spent last week in the mountains of Colorado and it felt like autumn. A couple of cool mornings I even wished we’d had hot chocolate in the cabin. I can’t wait for Autumn either.
what, are you kidding? i am already dreaming of scalloped mushrooms, acorn squash soup (ok, acorn squash anything!), and venison medallions – all washed down with a good pumpkin spice microbrew beer! not to mention bowls of rising bread dough littered around the oven warmed kitchen…its been cool enough in the mornings here (minnesota) that i’ve done the bread and this morning i prepared and froze the last of the sweetcorn (bye-bye summer!), but now i hear predictions of temps nearing the 90′s again! what?
pull up a chair autumn, and stay awhile!
Oh, so that’s where our (Mid-Atlantic) summer is… I’ve been wondering because it’s August 29th, it’s gray and rainy outside, and I’m wearing a jacket. Indoors.
I do love autumn, though, and your blog is quite nice!
Autumn is coming. How do I know this? The walnut tree never lies. It is the first to start turning. Today, there is more yellow on the tree and tons of walnuts yet to fall. The creek and the trees smelled so good this morning after the rain last night. Autumn is just around the corner in Kansas City,
I understand how you feel. I’m dying for casseroles, root vegetables and pumpkin pie. I started making hot tea last week. It’s been raining here (Tokyo, Japan) for a week and a half and I am delighted.
i’m always ready for hot chocolate, especially with a thick layer of marshmallows and a heavy dusting of cinnamon! and although i’ll be sad to see the summer goodies diminish, i think it’s safe to say that i’m ready for fall.
I see I am not alone (with the except of modernemama, to whom I say “Nars ‘Laguna’ is a very nice bronzer”). Casseroles, pies, hot chocolate — um, pecan things and cranberry sauces — I just cannot wait.
Welcome to all new folks here! Be sure to drop by the Lurker Buffet – it’s always open.
I live in southern CA and wish we had an autumn. I dream of the days when I will be living back in the midwest and can enjoy a true autumn. Is it wrong that I look at real estate listings at least once a week so that I’m ready when hubby gets transferred? Did I mention that the transfer is at least 2 years away?
that hot chocolate does look good, but we’re finally getting to enjoy some summer weather here in the bay area, so I’m not quite ready for fall!
I bought a new fall/winter coat today. It’s leopard print. Auntie Mame? Game on!
No! I’m in the minority, I see. I do love fall, but I do NOT like the cold, so fall is always bittersweet for me. I’m enjoying my sandals and peaches and tomatoes and limeades for as long as possible!
Welcome Lora, Foodhoe, and Amy H! Everyone’s love for cold weather is different, but I think we can all agree on hot chocolate.
Jean: your leopard coat will bring the weather. Start wearing it immediately.
Never!
