Sake To Me
Aug 20th, 2008 by Marilyn
I’m a relative newcomer to sake, but then again it’s only recently – with the mainstreaming of sushi restaurants in America – that so many sake choices are available. It’s not a single-bottle novelty at the Japanese steakhouse anymore – I see sake “flight” menus, tasting nights, and an explosion of sake-based cocktails, most notably the enjoyable sake-tini, below.

This is a smooth one, as they say. Sleek and cool, which is how you might feel after you drink a few, and are suddenly wearing sake-goggles. And Holy Rocky Aoki, have you seen the “sake bomb?” Here in our college town, sake-bombing is huge – but not for me, because a) it starts late – I mean, after 10 and everything! and b) let’s just say Greg spent many college nights holding my hair back at the porcelain god. I just won’t revisit sore knees on cold tile. Clearly, I am no sake bomber.
But apparently that’s what the kids are doing, and any Thursday night in the sushi joints you can see long rows of good-looking students doing a sort of kamikaze chicken dance with shooters. I see girls toss back their hair and also shot after shot, and think, their parents must be so proud.
Late nights, drinking stamina and coordination required? I’m out. But surely someone has been in. Do you love sake – hot, cold, shaken and stirred? Who among us has been brave enough to do the bomb?

Really? An Austin Powers reference? I’m shocked!
Yes Joel, and there’s a Steven Seagal reference in another discussion. You think I’m all Jane Austen and tea sandwiches over here, or what?
Well…………I thought you were all Jane Austen and tea sandwiches…………hehehehe
No………I am scared……..not brave……
I love sushi and I’ve tried wholeheartedly to like sake–I’ve tried it hot, cold, a number of different brands…a guy who used to live in Japan even took me to a fancy sake bar on a date once. But after all that effort, I still hate it. Oh well, I gave it the old college try.
i love sushi. i love sake, hot or cold. haven’t had it in a sake-tini, yet. hubby thinks it just tastes like straight alcohol. um…it is?
not so much on the sake bombs, but if they’d been around in my day, i’d sooooo have done them.
I don’t like sake, it takes like warm vodka w/ rice to me. I’m weird. You knew that already.
Kudos to Greg for being a hair holding guy! Rock on!
takes? TASTES. Der…
I’m still thinking that Greg needs to write a book……..so much we could learn……
i’m not a sake fan (so clearly, the sake bomb is not for me), but i’d love to ask the bartender for a sake-tini. what a fun name.
We foodies are an eclectic bunch. It’s not just about the Jane and tea, is it? Thanks for the variety in posts. Good work.
Nella
I’d like to see Jane come back, bust her corset and shoot a sake bomb.
