For Mom, Chip Chip Hooray
Jul 8th, 2008 by Marilyn
My mom has the exceptional gift of being easy to please. She likes glossy travel magazines, Walker Bros. hash browns, her grandchildren, soft throw blankets and a good Clinique bonus. This quality makes her, as they say, “easy” to buy for. And since we all know people who are “impossible” to buy for, I think we can agree that easy is pretty good.
Today is Mom’s birthday, and last year, we gave her…potato chips. Several thousand potato chips. It was a Potato Chip-of-the-Month club, and for months she happily signed for boxes – filled with bags – loaded with regional specialties like parmesan garlic, fiery jalapeno and even dill pickle-flavored chips.
We gifted her with chip heaven because what she really likes, no, requires, is potato chips. And also chocolate. Uh-huh. Potato chips…and chocolate.

Considering her status as a world-class snacker, she is a remarkably tiny person. You’d never guess she could put away three months’ worth of chips, or was known in her old office as the go-to chocolate girl. She cheerfully dispensed Hershey’s to sleepy co-workers like sugar band-aids.
Salt and chocolate and sugar. Sometimes, nothing else will do.

No avalanche of chips this year, Mom, just a virtual plate of salty and sweet…

…in honor of delighted snackers and the easy-to-please. Happy Birthday, Mom!

Coincidentally, today is my mom’s birthday too.
We took her to Johnny Carino’s. I suppose I could have spelled “happy birthday” in food too, with noodles out of the timballo, but I think she’s happier I didn’t.
Awwww, happy birthday to your Mom! I love salt and sweet too, and actually have had chocolate dipped potato chips. She has great taste…buds! hee hee
Thank you for the birthday wishes! A birthday candle in chocolate chips, next to potato chips. Wonderful!
Happy Birthday to Your Mom!
Have you ever tried chocolate covered potato chips? A little chocolate place near my parents sells these. I think they use Ruffles (the potato chips with ridges) and cover them in milk or dark chocolate. It sounds crazy but they are really, really good. Salty and sweet!
I’ve never tried chocolate potato chips before, but I have to say these look pretty yummy. Happy birthday to your mom! -Julia
potato-chip-of-the-month club? i didn’t know such a thing existed, but my mammy would LOVE it! she munches on chips all the time. in fact, when i lived at home, sometimes i’d wake up to the crunch of good ol’ lays getting squished between her molars.
harry and david’s makes the best chocolate covered potato chips i’ve ever eaten and your post reminded me of them….salty and sweet–a pregnant gal’s best friend.
This is so cute – it’s makin’ my nose do that pre-tear tingle.
I have a confession – I dip chips in nutella.
Nutella? Oh man…I have to try that!
Karen – hope your mom had a great birthday too! Glad to know you’re on the hunt for that breadboard. Keep up the good work.
Linda – taste…buds. You kill me.
Mom – glad you had a good one!
Joanne – thanks (from Mom too!)
Molly – I’m a chocolate-dipped pretzel girl, myself, but I can’t believe how many people want the chocolate potato chips!
Julia – thank you! Lots of family birthdays floating around, huh?
Grace – no one can ever eat just one!
Natalie – oh yeah. Put up your feet and enjoy whatever you like!
Jean – thanks. Maybe you just have allergies?
Maya – (and Jean, too) Josie tried the chips-in-Nutella as soon as you posted that! She finally pushed them both away and said “get these away from me!” So two thumbs up for Nutella chips (or Nutella anything).
I would just be happy with your chocolate handwriting.. Mine is not so great!
I thought I fought off the chocolate/salt craving after seeing these pictures yesterday, but no luck. I just dove into the last of the trail mix from Wild Oats–mmm, candied ginger, chocolate, salty peanuts… Guess I’m not such a staunch woman, after all.
Happy chip-filled birthday, Fran!! With virtual chocolate kisses.
