Sweeter Desserts, Same Eggplant and…Kidneys
Jun 3rd, 2008 by Marilyn
For the Country Doctor’s Wife, who requested an eggplant.

Eggplant pretty much looks like eggplant, but the surroundings certainly give it a boost. In Paris, toothpaste looks pretty and Kit Kats have nicer wrappers. Go figure.
For the grandparents.

For me again.

For the chandelier lovers, Napoleon’s dining room. Looks like little-guy complex leads to some big, big lights.

And for me again. Well. Guess what Miss Over-Confident I am so down with the French chefs accidentally ordered – a nice big pot of Rognons d’Veau.

Whoops! That would be Calves’ Kidneys. A whole bunch of them. They are perfectly acceptable and delicious to those who grew up with offal meats, but I’ve cooked, not eaten these things – call me cretinette, but cutting them up in a nice Madeira sauce, I felt a bit like Hannibal Lecter. Um…chewy.
Fortunately, dinner ended with caramelized apples in tarte tatin, and the most generous pot of tangy creme fraiche I have ever seen.

Josie rolled a brown sugar cube in the creme fraiche and ate it – heavenly.
Tomorrow we fly home, and though I’m seriously missing my all-bread breakfast already, I will be very happy to kiss my dog’s nose and to see you on the other side of the pond. Au revoir!

I found a t-shirt in LA that said “Will Work For Euros”. I’ll post the picture tomorrow.
The veggies look amazing. What kind of camera do you have?
Ummm, you can keep the veal kidneys…looks good but I’d be gagging…I’m a weenie.
Have a safe flight!
“Rognons d’agneau à la moutarde” is my favourite – melts like foie gras – not chewy at all.
It all looks so fantastic, I need a french fix fast.
Wow, interesting…kidneys…NOT! The pastries look incredible though. The colors alone are gorgeous! I have never been there, but it looks really amazing.
I wish I liked French cuisine better. I do not particularly wish that about les rognons, though. I’m spoiled enough to have been raised where eating organ meats was entirely optional. I still haven’t managed to try foie gras, although Anne’s Braunschweiger ball is divine. Maybe I’m biased if it’s not German? Hm.
I’m so glad you’re having fun in Paris, and hope your flight home is safe and uneventful. It can be entertaining, though, if it needs to be. *grin*
I may have a cooking experiment to share once you get here. Watch the blog for further details.
I… I … I think that might be the sweetest eggplant I have ever seen. And Josie looks like a native Parisienne in that pic. Safe travels home.
Ah…in a Paris market a mere eggplant becomes an aubergine; much more romantic sounding, eh? Have a safe trip home!
Josie – Love your picture! Did you see Johnny? MISS YOU!
Awww! The raspberries look fabulous! Delectable! A friend taught me how to make cream horns yesterday, and those berries would be lovely with them!
