The Golden Arches

We knew that we wanted arched doorways on the first floor of the house, forming a golden living room – to dining room – to kitchen triangle. And we had clear ideas about what put the arc in arches – not too small, not too big, slightly elongated. Curved but not circular. Square but not square.
Elliptical, maybe.
Finally, grabbing a pencil, Greg made like a crew member and sketched them on a stray door. Dan and his crew took it from there. Below, in June, a dining room-to-living room arch makes the first cut:

My soon-to-be favorite arch, from kitchen to dining room, gets framed in August:

By early September, these nifty arch-forming thingys – got the official term? feel free to let me know – get them into final shape for…

…the last step of drywall, which finally reveals their true shape. The finished and dry kitchen arch, through which all meals will travel, is luxuriously thick:

Any Thanksgiving turkey would be proud to travel under that arch. You can carve incredibly beautiful shapes from just wood and drywall. Who knew?
