A Touch of Wisconsin
Sep 10th, 2007 by Marilyn
Today we had the pleasure of seeing most of the natural split limestone go up on the house. The mortar gets lighter as it “cures” – but I believe it looks good in any light. We’d assumed the limestone would come from Kansas – we have plenty of it around here, you know – but Dan knew a supplier with some beautiful stone, cut in the most natural shades and shapes we wanted.
When the stone arrived on a pallet the other day, we read the shipping boxes we laughed: it was from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
There’s no getting away from the upper Midwest, that’s for sure. So though we didn’t build a house there (sorry, Cathy!) a touch of Wisconsin will, apparently, always be with us. Bringing limestone to Kansas is like taking coals to Newcastle – but in this case, they are extremely lovely coals – so who cares?

Josie, amazed by the stone and the cooler temperatures, too.

Now that is some good-looking rock. The doorway will be finished with red brick and more stone, then topped by a crazy heavy, six-foot long limestone “lintel.” Dan promises it will not fall on anyone.
