A Look Inside
Sep 9th, 2007 by Marilyn
There’s nothing like adding solid walls to make a space seem real. Some rooms look bigger than you thought, some look a bit cozier than you thought – but they all look great.

The dining room and entry hall take shape.

Greg & Dan look over the three newly built wooden trusses in the sun room – now with windows!
The trusses were built from reclaimed mixed hardwood beams, rough-sawn and probably from an early 20th century factory. Greg and I learned more about reclaimed wood than we’d ever thought possible when we visited Elmwood Reclaimed Timber to check out old beams. They were pretty grimy when we picked them out off the lot; since then they’ve been de-nailed, de-spiked, pressure washed, kiln-dried and skillfully crafted into pieces we can enjoy forever.
Apologies for the spots on the camera lens – picked them up in Lake Superior!

Greg & Dan again – don’t worry, Greg hasn’t joined the building crew – as they check the fit of our newly arrived copper fireplace hood. We foudn this handmade turn-of-the-century piece on – where else – eBay. It was salvaged from an historic San Diego home, and how lucky was I to find this unique steal. Note a few more vintage beams on the living room ceiling – eventually, the fireplace will be covered with split limestone.
Moving right along – a pace like mortar, but we’re moving.
